According to reports on Monday, Taiwo Awoniyi, a striker for Nottingham Forest, was sent to the hospital for emergency surgery due to an abdomen injury.
After being treated for a few minutes, Awoniyi attempted to continue playing after stretching in an unsuccessful attempt to convert Anthony Elanga’s cross.
The injury was sustained by the Nigerian international after he struck a post during Sunday’s 2-2 draw between Forest and Leicester at the City Ground.
Only on Monday did Forest’s medical team realise the full extent of the damage, and according to sources, he was rushed right away for the surgery, which was not thought to be life-threatening.
“The Club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City,” the club said in a statement on their X handle.
“Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. The Club will provide further updates when appropriate.”
Following the final whistle, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis became enraged with the event and raced onto the pitch to confront manager Nuno Espírito Santo in a peculiar altercation.
After Awoniyi was left on despite Nuno contacting his medical staff during stoppage time, Marinakis expressed concern about his condition.
It was a dismal day for Forest, as the stalemate with relegated Leicester dealt a serious blow to their prospects of qualifying for the Champions League.
In their attempt to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1980–81, Nuno’s seventh-place team is no longer in control of their own fate.
They sit one point outside the Premier League’s top five places, which guarantee qualification for the Champions League, with two games left against West Ham and top five rivals Chelsea.
Forest are assured of at least a place in the UEFA Conference League, which will see them play European football for the first time since 1995-96.
