In the wake of incessant attacks on Benue communities, killings of families and displacement of people from their villages, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa, has pushed for the training of credible youths across Benue State as vigilantes working under the supervision of the military, as was done in Borno State, to defend local communities against terrorist attacks.
Recall, two weeks ago, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, was reported to have temporarily relocated to Makurdi, the Benue State capital, to check the endless killings of innocent villagers by herders and militia groups.
The recent attack over the weekend at Yelewata community, leaving about 200 dead, houses and farm produce burnt, has raised more questions on what the army is doing to restore peace, and secure lives and properties.
On Tuesday, the CDS, General Christopher Musa, suggested training vigilantes to fight terrorists attacking Benue communities. This begs the question of effective security strategy in Benue by the security forces, as many netizens are asking. During the Yelewata attack, vigilantes and some security men were overpowered and killed by the herdsmen militia group.
