The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially confirmed Samuel Anyanwu national secretary following months of internal legal and political conflict.
Interim national chairman Umar Damagum made the announcement Wednesday during a press conference attended by key party leadership figures.
Present at the event were Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed and Senator Abba Moro, alongside several other high-ranking PDP stakeholders.
Damagum admitted the decision was difficult but emphasized that Samuel Anyanwu national secretary status must now be fully respected.
This confirmation came just 24 hours after a PDP delegation met with INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu for electoral consultation.
Damagum also announced the cancellation of the party’s June 30 National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting due to technical issues.
Instead, an extended national caucus meeting will now hold on June 30 to resolve outstanding leadership and legal questions.
He cited INEC’s notification rules as a reason for the change and promised full compliance with electoral commission requirements.
The internal battle over the Samuel Anyanwu national secretary role has worsened PDP’s long-running crisis and factional disunity since 2023.
Recall that in December 2024, the appeal court ruled Sunday Ude-Okoye should legally replace Anyanwu as national secretary.
The PDP’s south-east zonal leadership nominated Ude-Okoye after Anyanwu contested as the Imo State gubernatorial candidate in 2023.
Anyanwu, however, secured several injunctions delaying his removal, including one dismissed by the Court of Appeal as meritless.
Despite the legal battles, PDP’s latest decision appears final, confirming Anyanwu national secretary with immediate effect.
As the party faces critical decisions ahead of 2027, uniting its leadership ranks will be essential to regaining relevance.
