Slug:
Prominent opposition leaders have officially launched the African Democratic Congress at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
The African Democratic Congress unveiling initially scheduled for a hotel in Asokoro got cancelled despite confirmed payment and preparations.
Hotel management abruptly withdrew their facility hours before the event, forcing organisers to secure the Yar’Adua Centre instead.
The new Political Party aims to unite opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election to challenge the ruling APC.
Among the first to arrive were Peter Obi, Ireti Kingibe, and former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai.
Others include Senator Dino Melaye, ex-Minister Solomon Dalong, Dele Momodu, and former Benue Governor Gabriel Suswam.
Notably present were former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, Emeka Ihedioha, and ex-Air Chief, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (retd).
The gathering of such political heavyweights indicates rising opposition alignment under the African Democratic Congress umbrella.
Former Senate President David Mark is expected to chair the event and lead in adopting key electoral resolutions.
These resolutions will shape the opposition’s blueprint for the 2027 elections, including coalition-building and governance strategies.
Organisers described the abrupt hotel cancellation as a setback but reaffirmed their commitment to launching the opposition party.
According to sources, opposition stakeholders regard this moment as a critical turning point in reclaiming political space from the APC.
They also see the new party as a vehicle for inclusive governance, national unity, and political accountability.
More details are expected after formal addresses and communiqués are issued by party leaders and coalition representatives.
As Nigeria moves closer to 2027, the African Democratic Congress may redefine political dynamics across all six geopolitical zones.
