To boost morale ahead of the WAFCON final, President Tinubu has approved full Super Falcons allowances and bonuses.
In a bold move reflecting new commitment to Nigerian sports, Tinubu ordered the immediate disbursement of all pending payments. This includes match bonuses and allowances up to the July 26 final against Morocco in Casablanca.
The announcement came through a statement signed by Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), and circulated to the media.
Notably, this marks the first time Nigerian female footballers are receiving improved payments before a major final, avoiding typical last-minute disputes. Furthermore, the allowances were released through the NFF to reach players, coaches, and officials without delay.
This proactive move sets a new precedent in Nigerian sports, emphasizing respect, trust, and timely support for athletes.
“From now on, our athletes won’t just be celebrated in victory but will be respected throughout the process,” the NSC chairman emphasized.
In addition to football, the President extended support to basketball. D’Tigress, Nigeria’s AfroBasket champions, also received enhanced welfare packages and winning bonuses.
Their campaign begins at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Côte d’Ivoire from July 25 to August 3. With this support, the team is poised for another historic performance.
Importantly, the statement added that going forward, athletes will always receive their earnings promptly as long as resources allow.
“This is the new standard,” the NSC stressed, “Nigerian athletes will no longer be subjected to avoidable delays or drama.”
This reform aligns with broader efforts to professionalize sports management and build a stronger relationship between athletes and authorities.
