The LASU Senate suspends examinations and all academic and non-academic activities, escalating the ongoing 2025 staff strike.
This decision emerged after the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of all staff unions declared a full-scale industrial action.
Initially, the 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations were scheduled to begin on Monday, August 4, 2025, across all LASU faculties.
However, at a virtual meeting held on Saturday, August 2, the LASU Senate resolved to suspend operations indefinitely.
According to Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, Deputy Registrar and Public Relations Coordinator, the strike targets Lagos State Government policies.
She noted that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), NASU, SSANU, and NAAT jointly initiated the ongoing strike action.
The university management, led by Vice-Chancellor and Senate Chairman, has repeatedly sought peaceful resolutions through stakeholder engagement.
A high-level meeting chaired by Lagos Head of Service, Mr Olabode Agoro, was held on Friday, August 1, 2025.
That meeting included union representatives, LASU management, and officials from ministries connected to labour and tertiary education.
During discussions, all parties agreed to reconvene on Thursday, August 7, for further consultations and possible conflict resolution.
Union Demands Await State Government’s Response
Despite these efforts, the Senate stated that current academic conditions could not continue under prevailing strike circumstances.
“All students must vacate the hostels no later than 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4,” the Senate emphasized.
Students and staff across the LASU community have been urged to remain calm, patient, and law-abiding during this shutdown.
The suspension marks a significant escalation in the LASU strike 2025, affecting thousands of undergraduates and postgraduate students.
LASU had previously maintained academic stability compared to other Nigerian universities facing repeated industrial actions in recent years.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has yet to release an official statement addressing the core grievances presented by the unions.
