The Office of the Clerk to the National Assembly has clarified that only the Senate can decide Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s resumption. The Clerk stressed it lacks authority to permit the suspended Kogi Central Senator to return to legislative duties.
In a statement on Monday, Director of Information Bulah Audu Bi-Allah dismissed recent media reports as misleading. He explained that the Clerk’s office performs administrative roles guided by Senate resolutions, Standing Orders, and the 1999 Constitution.
“The Clerk does not hold power to review, reverse, or interpret Senate decisions,” the statement firmly declared.
This clarification follows Senator Natasha’s attempt to resume on September 4, 2025, after her six-month suspension ended. The Senate suspended her on March 6, 2025, following disciplinary proceedings.
The Clerk’s office confirmed it informed Senate leadership about her communication but emphasized it could not approve her return. “Only the Senate or a court can decide Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s resumption,” the statement added.
The statement further highlighted that determining whether she can resume without a new Senate resolution rests solely with the chamber. The Clerk underscored that the office remains bound by constitutional provisions and has no interpretative mandate.
