he Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that firefighters rescued nine victims from the Afriland Tower fire on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday. The blaze erupted in the six-storey building during the afternoon, causing panic among occupants.
Deputy Controller-General of the agency, Mr. Ogabi Olajide, explained that the Lagos Fire Service rescue operation revived five of the victims after successful resuscitation. He added that emergency teams continue working to stabilize four others, while several people managed to escape without injuries.
According to Olajide, the fire started in the inverter room located in the building’s basement. Soon after, thick smoke spread rapidly through multiple floors, engulfing the structure and forcing many occupants to run for safety. Consequently, firefighters had to battle not only flames but also dangerous smoke inhalation risks.
He noted that the quick intervention reduced casualties and stopped the fire from escalating to nearby buildings. Moreover, the response provided hope to those trapped inside the tower.
The distress call came in at exactly 1:38 p.m., and firefighters reacted immediately. Crews from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu stations rushed to the scene without delay. Their fast deployment helped control the situation, revive unconscious victims, and prevent further destruction.
Olajide praised his officers for their bravery and urged Lagos residents to adopt strict fire safety practices, particularly in high-rise offices and residential complexes.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the Afriland Tower fire. Meanwhile, emergency officials remain on-site to secure the building, reassure occupants, and prevent any secondary hazards along Broad Street.
