The Federal Government plans to develop a 4,000-MW renewable energy manufacturing capacity across several states. The initiative, part of the Nigeria First policy, aims to grow local production, create jobs, and expand access to clean energy nationwide.
Nigeria will establish a 4,000-Megawatt renewable energy capacity under the Nigeria First policy to grow local production and create jobs. The announcement followed the Nigeria Renewable Energy Innovation Forum (NREIF) meeting held in Abuja from October 14 to 15, 2025. Vice President Kashim Shettima chaired the session, which brought together key players from government, industry, and the energy sector.
4,000-MW renewable energy is Nigeria”s First Policy to Drive Local Production
The initiative falls under the Nigeria First policy in the power sector. The policy focuses on promoting local innovation, technology transfer, and job creation within the renewable energy industry. 4,000-MW renewable energy
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) will lead the programme. It targets 50 percent local content in the renewable energy supply chain within three years.
“This partnership will deliver 4,000MW of renewable manufacturing capacity and grow the energy value chain across participating states,” the communiqué noted.
Promoting Industrial Growth and Energy Access
The project will boost Nigeria’s renewable energy base and reduce dependence on imports. It will also encourage local production of solar panels, inverters, and related equipment. As a result, the plan supports Nigeria’s energy transition goals under the Paris Agreement and the National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy (NREEEP).
In addition, the REA said it will collaborate with state governments, investors, and development partners to ensure sustainability. The agency believes the initiative will create jobs, attract investment, and strengthen Nigeria’s position as a regional renewable hub.
Experts say the new plan supports ongoing reforms to improve electricity access, especially in underserved communities. Moreover, it complements other national programmes such as Solar Power Naija and the Energy Transition Plan.
