The African Democratic Congress (ADC), has commended the Federal Government’s swift action in foiling a failed coup in Benin Republic, urging President Bola Tinubu to show the same urgency in addressing Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
In a statement on Monday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi highlighted the Federal government’s quick intervention in Benin, where pro-government forces, supported by Nigerian troops and air support, overpowered soldiers who had seized the national television station and declared the ouster of President Patrice Talon.
While appreciating the rapid response, the ADC questioned why similar decisiveness has not been applied to tackling banditry, terrorism, and violent crime within Nigeria.
“If Nigeria can respond decisively to threats outside its borders, why has the government failed to act with urgency at home?” the party asked.
The ADC further stated that defending democracy requires good governance, improved citizen welfare, and tolerance for opposing views.
It called on the government to address domestic insecurity with the same determination demonstrated in Benin, saying that protecting Nigerian lives is crucial to sustaining democracy.
