A group of former National Assembly members has rejected the ADC deregistration lawsuit filed in their name. They said the case is fraudulent and unauthorised, arguing that it was pushed by people acting without their approval.
In a statement signed by several former lawmakers, the group said they had no involvement in the ADC deregistration suit now before the Federal High Court. They warned that the individuals behind the case were misleading the court and the public.
Moreover, they condemned the attempt to use their names to pursue a political agenda they do not support.
Why Former Legislators Say the ADC Deregistration Suit Lacks Legitimacy
The lawmakers explained that more than 5,000 Senators and House members have served since 1999. Therefore, they said it was misleading for a small group to claim they represent all former legislators.
They stressed that the legislature values seniority, parliamentary record, and tradition. Because of this, they argued that no one without legitimacy or history within the institution can speak for former lawmakers.
The group accused Hon. Nnanna Igbokwe of impersonation for claiming to lead the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL). They stated that his exco was never elected or recognized by any official meeting.
They added that his team was simply a small clique attempting to exploit the names of ex-legislators.
According to the former legislators, no meeting, vote, or discussion ever took place to authorize the ADC deregistration lawsuit. They described the case as illegal and misleading.
They further suggested that some political actors in Abuja may be supporting the suit from behind the scenes.
The group said the suit is part of a wider move to weaken Nigeria’s political space. They warned that such actions could push the country toward a one-party system.
They promised to resist any attempt to limit political competition.
The lawmakers urged the court to dismiss the case immediately. They said the suit wastes judicial time and is based on misrepresentation.
They also reaffirmed their support for multiparty democracy and the protection of opposition parties.
