The Social Democratic Party (SDP), has explained why Nigerians must insist on real-time transmission of election results from the Nigerian Senate.
Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, National Publicity of SDP, in a statement on Friday, said the party does not want the repeat of the 2023 election’s credibility challenges.
Recall that the Senate on Wednesday passed the Electoral Act amendment bill.
However, in the past two days, the issue of electronic transmission of election results has stirred controversy.
A senate committee on media and publicity member, Yemi Adaramodu, in a recent interview, said network challenges pose a significant setback to e-transmission of election results.
SDP expressed deep concern over the resistance of the senate to a positive change in the country’s democratic journey.
The opposition party noted the senate’s move to go against the popular will of Nigerians over the real-time transmission of election results would backfire.
The party said real-time transmission of election results would reduce and prevent manipulation of results during manual transportation.
“It is mindful that eternal vigilance is the price for freedom, that the SDP calls on the citizenry, civil society groups and all democrats to step up strongly, their resistance against the few holders of our mandates, who are hell-bent on promoting and serving their interest against the true interest of Nigeria.
“The nation cannot afford to have the 2027 general elections go the way of lack of credibility as we had in 2023,” the statement said.
