Hyacinth Alia, the governor of Benue State, recently inaugurated local government caretaker committee chairmen in the state, urging them to provide high-quality services to the local populace. The governor had formally requested an extension of the caretaker committee chairmen’s tenure from the Benue State House of Assembly to allow the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) adequate time to prepare and conduct local government council elections.
Subsequently, the State House of Assembly screened and approved the list of nominees presented by the governor, replacing Mr. Timothy Hembaor of Ushongo Local Government Area with Hon. Mvendaga Atetan.
During the swearing-in ceremony at the Government House, the governor charged the chairmen to eschew excuses and diligently serve their respective local government areas in a manner that aligns with the principles of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. He encouraged them to demonstrate their utmost effort, particularly in light of the autonomy granted to local governments by his administration, emphasizing the importance of attending to the needs of the local populace and ensuring they benefit from democratic dividends.
The governor also challenged them to emulate the state’s infrastructural progress at the local government level, as part of his administration’s vision to extend such developments to the third tier of government in the state.
In response, Philip Achuah, the Caretaker Chairman of Konshisha LGA, expressed gratitude to the governor for the quasi-autonomy provided to the local government system in the state, pledging to fulfill their duties diligently without disappointment.
