In a bid to recapture Anambra State in the upcoming 2025 gubernatorial election, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders Forum has emphasized the importance of upholding the established zoning agreement. Led by Chief Innocent Obi, the forum made it clear that any efforts to disrupt the zoning pact would be vehemently opposed.
At a gathering convened in Awka on Wednesday, Chief Obi conveyed that the forum, which consists of respected individuals from all 21 Local Government Areas of the state, is actively rallying grassroots support in readiness for the election.
He underscored the critical nature of adhering to the zoning agreement, specifically ensuring that the gubernatorial position remains within Anambra South.
In his remarks, Chief Obi stated, “We are present, we are engaged, and we maintain a harmonious rapport with the state party’s leadership.
“Regardless of your actions, public sentiment will judge you. There exists a mutual understanding that dictates the course of affairs in Anambra state.
“In Imo state, all political factions united under what they referred to as an equity charter. The principle is simple: fairness in distribution. The repercussions of disregarding this principle are severe.
“To me, a verbal agreement holds as much weight as a written contract. The existing structure in Anambra state is clear. Anyone who disputes this is being disingenuous. As elders, we must speak the truth.
“A framework is already in place. In the 2022 elections, a party that dismissed zoning as irrelevant faced consequences. They suffered because their candidate did not align with the designated region.
“Whatever decisions the party makes, the elders must stand in solidarity as we are subordinate to them.
“There is an established system, and if the party chooses to alter it, our hands are tied. However, we hope that the party will respect the existing framework. We advocate for a rotational system where each region takes its turn.
“The elders would prefer a candidate from the South. In my opinion, the South has served its term and is entitled to an additional four years.”
Another member of the forum, Mr. Okey Chukwuogo, elucidated that the zoning arrangement was initially proposed by former Governor Peter Obi and received backing from various stakeholders, including town unions and traditional leaders.
“When these entities endorsed it, can anyone refute the zoning of Anambra? Zoning is indeed in place, but power must be actively pursued,” he remarked.
The APC Elders Forum affirmed its unwavering commitment to upholding the zoning agreement, emphasizing its dedication to equitable and just political processes in Anambra State.
