Belgium powerhouses Union Saint-Gilloise are on the verge of finalizing a transfer for young striker Promise Oluwatobi Akinpelu David, as reported by Umpire Sports.
Hailing from Brampton, Ontario, Canada, Akinpelu David has embarked on a varied career since departing from TFC Academy to join Vaughan Azzurri in 2016.
The 22-year-old striker has had spells in Croatia, the United States, and Malta before making the move to Estonia to join Kalju FC in February 2023. The year 2024 has been particularly outstanding for David as the Nigerian-Canadian forward has scored an impressive 14 goals and provided three assists in 16 appearances in the Premium Liiga.
As per transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri, David has caught the eye of Union SG with the Belgian club on the brink of finalizing the transfer for the former NK Trnje Zagreb standout.
Union SG has a track record of offering a platform for relatively unknown Nigerian talents to showcase their skills and rise to become global stars.
Les Unionistes paid €6 million to secure the services of Victor Boniface from Bodø/Glimt, where the Nigerian prodigy had faced challenges with injuries and consistency.
Nonetheless, Boniface proved to be a wise investment as he netted 17 goals and contributed 12 assists in 51 matches for Union SG before securing a €22 million move to Bayer Leverkusen last year.
Akinpelu David will aim to have a similar impact in Belgium, where his towering stature (1.95m) and ambidextrous ball skills could provide him with a significant edge.
The move to Union SG marks a new chapter in Akinpelu David’s career, one filled with promise and potential.
His adaptability and goal-scoring prowess will be crucial for Union SG as they look to strengthen their attacking force.
The Belgian club’s faith in young talents like Akinpelu David highlights their commitment to nurturing and developing promising players.
With his impressive performances in Estonia, David has proven that he has the skill and determination to succeed at the highest levels.
Union SG’s investment in Akinpelu David could prove to be another shrewd move, following the success of Victor Boniface.
