Finidi George tendered his resignation as the head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria after overseeing just two matches. According to Umpire Sports, the former Super Eagles and Enyimba International coach, Finidi George, is poised to assume the role of head coach at NPFL club, Rivers United.
The 53-year-old tactician was at the helm of the Super Eagles during the March International break and was officially appointed as the head coach of the Nigerian National team in May. However, a defeat by the Benin Republic and a draw against South Africa did not enhance his reputation.
Amid speculations that the NFF was contemplating hiring a technical advisor and potentially demoting Finidi, the ex-Ajax winger submitted his letter of resignation. This action sparked further controversy, including Victor Osimhen venting his frustrations on Instagram regarding purported remarks made by the coach.
Nevertheless, the interest in the former Enyimba International coach remains strong, as he is on the verge of assuming the managerial position at Rivers United shortly after stepping down as the head coach of the Super Eagles.
Rivers United concluded the NPFL 2023/2024 campaign in 8th place, trailing league Champions Enugu Rangers by 17 points. The hope is that Finidi’s appointment will guide them back to the pinnacle of Nigerian football.
Having guided Enyimba International to victory in the 2022/2023 NPFL season, Finidi spent nearly three years at the club before transitioning to a full-time role with the Super Eagles. Finidi George’s coaching career in the last two months has been tumultuous, with his resignation from the Super Eagles marking a significant turning point.
The move to Rivers United presents a new challenge for the coach, who will be looking to make his mark in domestic football once again.
With his proven track record at Enyimba International, there are high expectations for Finidi to bring success to Rivers United and elevate them to new heights in Nigerian football. The upcoming season will be a test of Finidi’s abilities as a coach, as he aims to replicate his past achievements and establish himself as a force to be reckoned with in the Nigerian football landscape.
