Following his absence from the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender events in Lagos and Tunis last month, Quadri Aruna has returned to the limelight at the prestigious WTT Star Contender Bangkok 2024 in Thailand.
As a prominent contender in the men’s singles category, the Nigerian athlete is determined to enhance his ranking points in preparation for the forthcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Presently positioned 16th by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), Aruna has a promising opportunity to secure a position among the top 16 seeds in the men’s singles competition in Paris, especially since only two of the five highly-ranked Chinese players will be participating.
Aruna stands out as the lone African (Nigerian) representative amidst a constellation of renowned stars competing at the Huamark Indoor Stadium in Bangkok.
Having skipped the 2023 Lagos event, Aruna was initially set to partake in the second edition of the tournament at the Molade Okoya-Thoma Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, but withdrew shortly before the commencement.
Wahid Oshodi, the Deputy President of ITTF Africa and the Chairman of the LOC, clarified that Aruna’s decision to forego the Lagos event was due to his focused preparations for the Olympics.
“Aruna Quadri was strongly advised against participating in the WTT Contender Lagos by the physiotherapist as a precautionary measure to prevent potential injuries,” stated Mr. Oshodi.
At 35 years of age, Aruna recognizes the significance of the upcoming Olympics and is diligently working alongside the seasoned Segun Toriola, head coach of the Nigerian table tennis team, to optimize his performance for the prestigious event.
Accompanying Aruna in Bangkok is Canada’s Edward Ly, whose remarkable ascent from a ranking beyond the top 300 to the 36th position in the world within a year has been both inspirational and extraordinary. Ly’s journey in 2024 includes his debut in the WTT Champions series, where he has continued to climb the rankings steadily.
Ly’s remarkable progress has captured the attention of the table tennis community worldwide, showcasing his dedication and talent on the international stage. His presence in the WTT Star Contender Bangkok 2024 adds an intriguing dynamic to the competition, as spectators eagerly anticipate his performance against some of the world’s best players. Edward Ly’s journey serves as a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence and the transformative power of hard work in the realm of professional table tennis.
