The Nigeria Police Force in Yobe state has apprehended one Auwalu Haruna for the alleged abduction of a 20-year-old woman, and the alleged use of charm to impregnate her. In an official statement, the Spokesperson of the Command, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim disclosed that a total of 34 cases of gender-based violence and related crimes were documented in the preceding six months, with 85 percent currently undergoing legal proceedings resulting in convictions.
“Recently, the command detained Mallam Auwalu Haruna, a self-professed Marabou, for the purported abduction, utilization of mystical charms, and impregnation of a 20-year-old woman.”
“From January to June 2024, the command registered 34 instances of GBV and associated offenses, with 85% presently subject to legal proceedings and a few verdicts already delivered,” the statement elaborated.
In the latest occurrence, “Tarmuwa Divisional Police Headquarters received a report from Alh Mohammed Kellu regarding the abduction of his daughter by Mallam Auwalu Haruna on June 6, 2024. Subsequent to an extensive search, the victim was located in the custody of the suspect in Anguwan Arewa, Gaya LGA, Kano State.”
“A medical assessment disclosed that the victim was two months pregnant. The victim admitted that she was coerced into ingesting a medicinal concoction, inducing unconsciousness and susceptibility to the assailant’s actions.”
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Garba Ahmed, urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to exercise vigilance concerning the associations their wards maintain, as offenders are frequently close relatives, neighbors, or acquaintances.
He implored stakeholders to unite in combating GBV, recognizing its profound implications on the well-being and advancement of the girl child and society as a whole.
