The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra views the recent Supreme Court ruling on the direct remittance of Local Government Council allocation as a “reprieve” for the local government system.
Chief Chigozie Igwe, Chairman of PDP in Anambra, conveyed his response to the judgment in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday. Igwe articulated that the verdict would address the reluctance of certain state governments to conduct council elections, thereby fostering development and enhancing democratic participation at the grassroots level. This heightened civic awareness among the populace would ultimately lead to greater accountability of officials.
“The ruling signifies a positive advancement for democracy; we embrace it given that the ruling party has been exerting efforts to undermine the local government system in Anambra.
“The primary challenge facing our nation lies in rural development, which cannot flourish without autonomous local government administration elected through legitimate processes.
“The ruling party in Anambra has been actively engaged in suppressing the local government system, but this judgment signals a promising commencement for its restoration,” he remarked.
Igwe urged the Federal Government to ensure that the council funds are not withheld due to the absence of elected council officials. He called upon the Anambra government to promptly conduct local council elections, thereby enabling the state’s residents to reap the benefits of the ruling.
“This essentially implies that funds have been redirected to the grassroots level, prompting individuals to engage in campaigning and disseminating information about their proposed initiatives.” The judgment will not affect the aspirations of those vying for gubernatorial positions; their qualifications, rather than the control of Local Government allocations, will determine their eligibility,” he concluded.
“The recent Supreme Court ruling on local government council allocation has indeed brought about a renewed sense of hope and optimism within Anambra’s political landscape. The impact of this decision extends beyond just financial matters; it signifies a significant step towards strengthening democracy at the grassroots level. By ensuring direct remittance of funds to the local government councils, the ruling paves the way for increased transparency, accountability, and efficiency in governance.
This landmark judgment serves as a reminder of the crucial role that local government systems play in fostering development and empowering communities. It underscores the importance of conducting regular council elections to uphold democratic principles and ensure that the voices of the people are heard. With the allocation of funds directly to the grassroots level, there is a greater opportunity for meaningful grassroots development initiatives to take root and flourish.
Moving forward, it is imperative for both the Federal Government and the Anambra state government to collaborate in ensuring the effective implementation of this ruling. By promptly conducting local council elections and facilitating the proper utilization of allocated funds, they can further enhance the impact of this decision and promote good governance practices. Ultimately, the Supreme Court’s decision has set the stage for a more inclusive, participatory, and accountable local government system in Anambra, heralding a new era of progress and prosperity for the state.”
