Chelsea Football Club has officially withdrawn from the pursuit of 20-year-old Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion, according to a report. The decision comes after Atletico rejected two separate bids from Chelsea for the Spain Under-21 international of Nigerian descent.Omorodion returned to Atletico Madrid following a successful loan spell at Alaves during the 2023/24 season, where he impressed with eight goals and one assist in 34 La Liga appearances.

His performances caught the attention of Chelsea, known for their willingness to invest heavily in promising talents under the ownership of Todd Boehly, who took over recently.Chelsea initially made an offer of around €30 million (£25.3 million), which could have risen to €40 million (£33.7 million) with add-ons, but Atletico swiftly turned down the proposal. Undeterred, Chelsea returned with an improved bid of £42 million, yet Atletico remained steadfast in their stance of retaining Omorodion, whose contract runs for another four seasons.Reports from Spain indicate that Chelsea has now opted out of the pursuit due to Atletico’s consistent rejection of their offers.

The London club, which had earmarked Omorodion as a potential star for the future, faced strong resistance from Atletico, who see the young striker as a key player in their future plans.Diego Simeone, Atletico’s manager, reportedly views Omorodion as a potential successor to Memphis Depay, with uncertainty surrounding the future of Alvaro Morata further emphasizing Atletico’s desire to retain him.

Despite Chelsea’s interest and Omorodion’s potential, the player himself is reportedly keen to continue his development at Atletico Madrid, adding to the complexities of negotiations. With Chelsea now focusing their attention elsewhere in the transfer market, the saga surrounding Omorodion highlights the competitive landscape of European football’s transfer dealings.
