Katsina Rerun Election Verdict: Tribunal Denies PDP’s Claim Against APC Rep Member

The election petitions tribunal for the Katsina State 2024 rerun elections has dismissed a petition against the member representing Faskari/Sabuwa/Kankara constituency, Alhaji Dalhatu Tafoki. The tribunal court also reaffirmed Tafoki’s victory as the duly elected representative of the constituency.
Chaired by Justice K.A Ojiaka, the three-member panel dismissed the petition brought forth by the PDP candidate, Alhaji Jamilu Muhammad. The tribunal further instructed Muhammad to pay a fine of N150,000 to each of the three respondents, namely Tafoki, APC, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The petitioner alleged that the election which saw Tafoki emerge victorious was marred by irregularities, instances of multiple thumb printing, voter disenfranchisement, and non-compliance with the electoral act. However, the tribunal unanimously rejected the petition for lacking merit due to the petitioner’s failure to present witnesses substantiating the claims.

The tribunal emphasized that multiple thumb printing during an election constitutes a criminal offense, thus requiring the petitioner to provide irrefutable evidence. Following the judgment, Malam Isiyaku Wada-Faskari, the senior legislative aide to Tafoki, commended the tribunal for its decision, deeming it a positive development. He urged the PDP candidate to collaborate with the winner in driving the constituency’s development for the benefit of the populace.
It is worth noting that in the 2023 general elections, INEC initially declared Muhammed as the victor. However, a subsequent ruling by the Election Petition Tribunal deemed the election inconclusive, prompting INEC to conduct re-election in 16 polling units in Kankara and four in Faskari Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The outcome of the tribunal’s verdict in the Katsina State 2024 rerun elections signifies a significant milestone in the electoral process. The dismissal of the petition against Alhaji Dalhatu Tafoki, the incumbent representative of the Faskari/Sabuwa/Kankara constituency, solidifies the legitimacy of his victory. The tribunal’s decision to uphold Tafoki’s win underscores the importance of adhering to electoral laws and regulations to ensure the integrity of the democratic process.

In light of the tribunal’s ruling, it is essential for all political parties and candidates to respect the outcome and work towards fostering unity and development within the constituency. Collaboration between the elected representative and other stakeholders is crucial in addressing the needs and concerns of the electorate. Moving forward, it is imperative for all parties involved to prioritize the welfare and progress of the community above personal or partisan interests.
The electoral dispute serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency, accountability, and adherence to electoral guidelines in ensuring free and fair elections. It highlights the need for continuous monitoring and evaluation of the electoral process to prevent malpractices and uphold the principles of democracy. As the political landscape evolves, it is essential for all stakeholders to uphold the rule of law and promote democratic values for the betterment of society.
