Edo Election: APC Candidate Accused by Pro-Democracy Group in Suspicious Death of Police Inspector
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

A pro-democracy group from Edo State, known as Movement For Democracy, has expressed its sympathy to the Nigeria Police Force following the death of Inspector Onu Ako. Inspector Ako tragically lost his life during a violent incident at Benin Airport last Thursday, which occurred shortly after the arrival of Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu and APC governorship candidate Senator Monday Okpebholo from Abuja.
In a statement released on Monday by Osaze Samuel, the group’s convener, offered condolences to Inspector Ako’s family and friends. The group blamed Senator Monday Okpebholo for the officer’s death, attributing it to his alleged political misconduct.
According to the group, Okpebholo’s disregard for security protocols and his decision to lead a public procession instead of following security advice from the Commissioner of Police contributed directly to the tragic outcome. They criticized Okpebholo and Deputy Governor Shaibu for prioritizing their political ambitions over public safety.

The Movement For Democracy emphasized that the incident was avoidable if Okpebholo had acted with civility and respect, and they called for him to be held accountable for his actions. They accused Okpebholo of exploiting the situation for political gain and urged the people of Edo State to reject him and the APC in the upcoming elections.
The group concluded by commending the Nigerian Bar Association and the citizens of Edo State who condemned the incident, stating that Okpebholo and Shaibu’s actions demonstrated a reckless pursuit of personal and political interests at the expense of public welfare. They asserted that such behavior disqualifies them from leading Edo State or any progressive society.

The tragic incident at Benin Airport involving the death of Inspector Onu Ako has sparked outrage and raised concerns about political accountability and public safety in Edo State. The actions of APC governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu have come under intense scrutiny, with the Movement For Democracy highlighting their alleged role in the officer’s untimely demise.

As the investigation unfolds, it is crucial for political leaders to prioritize security protocols and adhere to professional advice to prevent further tragedies. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible leadership and the consequences of prioritizing personal agendas over the well-being of the public.
In the run-up to the elections, voters must carefully consider the character and conduct of candidates, ensuring that those seeking office demonstrate integrity, respect for the rule of law, and a genuine commitment to serving the interests of the people. The call for accountability in this case underscores the need for transparency, ethical governance, and a culture of accountability in Nigerian politics.
Moving forward, it is essential for all political actors to uphold the highest standards of conduct, respect the sanctity of human life, and prioritize the safety and security of all citizens. The tragic loss of Inspector Ako should serve as a catalyst for positive change and a renewed commitment to fostering a political environment that values integrity, accountability, and the common good above all else.
