Edo Election 2024: APC Calls for Obaseki to Be Placed on Security Watch

In light of recent threats suggesting potential unrest in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has made a strong appeal to the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, to closely monitor the activities of Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki. This request, articulated in a statement, arises from concerns that individuals are mobilizing hoodlums for imminent protests, following Obaseki’s alarming statement that “Nigeria will burn”.

Emperor Jarrett Tenebe, the APC’s state chairman, underscored the urgency of the situation, citing emerging evidence that suggests plans are underway to instigate chaos through recruited protesters. Tenebe also called for the immediate resignation of Commissioner of Police Funsho Adegboye, arguing that his perceived bias and partisan actions undermine the integrity of law enforcement in Edo State. Alternatively, Tenebe suggested Adegboye’s transfer out of Edo to prevent further discredit to the police force.

The APC chairman accused Governor Obaseki of orchestrating a strategy to sow anarchy not only in Edo State but also in neighboring South-South states. He alleged that Obaseki intended to incite unrest during planned protests and subsequently attribute any resulting destruction to the APC, thereby tarnishing the party’s reputation. Tenebe urged the National Security Adviser to conduct a thorough investigation into recent meetings held by Governor Obaseki within and outside Edo State.

In addition to monitoring Obaseki’s activities closely, Tenebe appealed for precautionary measures, such as altering or withdrawing the governor’s security detail as the protest date approaches. He also proposed restricting Obaseki’s movements on the day of the planned demonstrations to preemptively mitigate potential disruptions and maintain public order.

Expressing disappointment in the Edo State House of Assembly’s perceived inaction, Tenebe criticized its failure to address what he described as a critical security threat posed by Governor Obaseki. He emphasized the need for swift and decisive action to safeguard public safety and prevent any orchestrated disturbances.

Further elaborating on his concerns, Tenebe highlighted alleged collaborations between Governor Obaseki and various entities, including the Edo State Security Network (ESSN), POWOV, and purported thugs recruited from neighboring states like Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Bayelsa. He called for urgent measures to disrupt these alleged plans and restore peace and stability in the region.

The unfolding situation underscores broader implications for governance and security in Nigeria, particularly regarding the management of public protests and the responsibilities of elected officials. It raises questions about the balance between freedom of expression and the maintenance of law and order, as well as the role of security agencies in upholding these principles.

As the nation prepares for potential unrest, stakeholders are closely watching developments and anticipating decisive actions from authorities to address the concerns raised by the APC. The outcome of these events could significantly influence political dynamics and governance practices in Edo State and beyond.

The APC’s call for heightened vigilance and proactive security measures reflects growing apprehensions over potential disruptions orchestrated by Governor Obaseki and his alleged collaborators. The situation demands careful scrutiny and decisive action to safeguard public safety and uphold the rule of law amid escalating tensions and uncertainties.
