Supporters of Fubara and Wike Clash in Rivers State

Supporters of Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, clashed with followers of former governor Nyesom Wike in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, resulting in a tense confrontation during a government-sponsored medical outreach event in Eliozu community.

The incident unfolded when officials from the state Ministry of Health commenced a medical program focused on women at the Eliozu Health Centre. Witnesses reported that the trouble began when supporters allegedly loyal to Martin Amaewhule, a factional Speaker of the State House of Assembly, arrived at the venue seeking information about the gathering.

The group allegedly aligned with ex-governor Nyesom Wike, encountered resistance from supporters of Chijioke Ihunwo, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, who are loyal to Governor Fubara.

Eyewitnesses described a heated exchange that quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. Stones were hurled, and the situation deteriorated, prompting a response from anti-riot police officers who arrived at the scene to restore order. Teargas were used to disperse the clashing groups, with unfortunate consequences; a child was affected by the teargas and became unconscious.

Due to the escalating violence, the medical outreach had to be relocated abruptly from Eliozu Health Centre to a state-owned medical facility in the Waterlines area of Port Harcourt. This relocation disrupted the program’s intended purpose of providing health services to women in need.

Chijioke Ihunwo, speaking out after the incident, accused Martin Amaewhule of instigating the disruption with the involvement of security personnel. Ihunwo voiced his concern over the use of force against women attending the health program, alleging that the police actions were disproportionate and uncalled for.
“We will not tolerate such acts of intimidation in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area,” Ihunwo declared.

He appealed to national leaders, including President Bola Tinubu and authorities in Abuja, to intervene and restore peace in Rivers State. Ihunwo urged for accountability, insisting that local governance should not be undermined by external influences.

Reacting to the situation, Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the incident. She acknowledged that the police responded to a distress call and stated that an investigation into the disturbance was underway.

The clash between alleged supporters of Governor Fubara and ex-governor Wike reflects underlying political tensions within Rivers State. The involvement of factional interests linked to the State House of Assembly underscores broader divisions that often manifest in local governance and public events.

Such incidents highlight the challenges faced in maintaining public order and conducting civic programs effectively amidst political rivalries. The use of teargas and physical altercations, particularly involving vulnerable populations such as women and children, underscores the urgent need for dialogue and conflict resolution mechanisms in the region.

The fallout from this event may have broader implications for political stability and governance in Rivers State. It underscores the importance of leadership at both the state and national levels in fostering dialogue, promoting peaceful coexistence, and ensuring that public events intended for community benefit proceed without disruption or harm.

As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the clash, stakeholders are urged to prioritize the well-being of communities and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
Efforts to address the root causes of political tensions, promote inclusivity, and uphold the rule of law will be crucial in mitigating future conflicts and advancing the collective interests of all residents in Rivers State.
