Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has publicly expressed his deep sorrow over the death of Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. Obi’s reaction was shared through a series of posts on his X account on Friday, where he conveyed his profound grief and shock over the loss of Iwuanyanwu.

Obi described Iwuanyanwu as a significant figure in Nigerian society. He said, “I am greatly disheartened by the death of Mr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, an elder statesman and President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. The news of his passing has left everyone who knew him heartbroken. He was not just a father to many but also a bridge-builder who was dedicated to promoting peaceful coexistence in our nation.”

Iwuanyanwu, who passed away on Thursday, was reported to have died after a brief illness. His son, Jide Iwuanyanwu, made the announcement, stating that the elder Iwuanyanwu was 82 years old at the time of his death. In the family statement, Jide Iwuanyanwu detailed, “The Iwuanyanwu family of Umuohii Atta in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State announces the passing of our patriarch, Engr Chief Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Iwuanyanwu-Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo. He died on July 25, 2024, after a brief illness. He was the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and President of Owerri Peoples Assembly.”

Iwuanyanwu’s death marks the end of an era for the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, as he had been a key figure in the Igbo socio-cultural organization. His leadership was noted for its commitment to fostering unity and development among the Igbo people and in Nigeria at large. He is survived by his wife, Lady Princess Frances Iwuanyanwu, several children, and grandchildren.

The family has announced that details about the burial arrangements will be provided later, once they have made the necessary consultations. In his lifetime, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu made significant contributions both as a politician and businessman, earning him a place among the most influential and affluent Igbo individuals in Nigeria.

Born on September 4, 1942, Iwuanyanwu was from Umuohii Atta in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State. His extensive career included roles in both politics and business, showcasing his versatility and dedication to public service. He became the 11th President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo on April 20, 2023. His leadership followed the tenure of George Obiozor, who led the organization for two years before his death on December 29, 2022.

Throughout his career, Iwuanyanwu was celebrated for his ability to bridge divides and build relationships across various sectors of society. His passing is seen as a great loss not only to the Ohanaeze Ndigbo but also to the wider Nigerian community, which valued his efforts in promoting peace and progress.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, under Iwuanyanwu’s presidency, focused on advancing the interests of the Igbo people and ensuring their voices were heard in national affairs. His leadership style was marked by a commitment to dialogue and unity, qualities that will be remembered fondly by those who worked with him.

As the community and the nation reflect on his contributions, there is a collective recognition of the void left by his passing. Iwuanyanwu’s legacy will continue to influence the Igbo socio-cultural landscape and his impact will be felt for many years to come.

Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu’s death is a significant loss to both the Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Nigeria at large. His life and work have left a lasting imprint on the nation’s history, and he will be remembered for his dedication to promoting peace and unity. The community awaits further details regarding his funeral arrangements, as they prepare to honor his memory and celebrate his remarkable life.
