Fuel Price Hike: Christian Association of Nigeria Urges Federal Government to Reduce Costs

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in Niger State, respectfully urges the Federal Government to consider reducing the price of fuel and implementing regulations on the prices of food items. Additionally, the State Chairman of CAN, Most Reverend Bulus Yohanna, encourages the Christian faithful to prioritize prayer in addressing the challenges faced by the country, rather than participating in the proposed nationwide protest.

In a statement issued yesterday in Minna, Most Reverend Bulus Yohanna emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and avoiding violence, as it has never resulted in positive outcomes. “While peaceful protests with clear demands can be effective, there is a risk of such events being hijacked by miscreants, leading to arrests, shootings, and other forms of harm. It is crucial to recognize that violence only brings destruction, loss of lives, and setbacks, rather than fostering the desired change.

Therefore, it is imperative for all individuals to refrain from participating in the protest and instead engage in constructive dialogue with their children, wards, and congregation members. Let us strive to uphold peace and unity in our actions, and avoid allowing any opportunistic individuals or groups to disrupt the harmony and safety of our communities.”

The Chairman, who also serves as the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, urged President Bola Tinubu to not only provide palliatives but also to consider reducing the pump price of petrol and regulating the prices of food items. This measure would effectively address the rising cost of living and bring relief to Nigerian citizens.

He further urged the residents of the state to take advantage of the current farming season, particularly highlighting the proactive approach of the Farmer Governor who has prioritized the agricultural sector with the aim of ensuring food security for the nation.

In a separate statement, the former Chairman of CAN in Kaduna State, Rev John Hayab, appealed to all Nigerians to refrain from actions that may hinder the progress of the country. While acknowledging the legitimacy of protests as a means of expression in accordance with the Nigerian constitution, Hayab cautioned against any form of violence or destruction that could arise from the planned nationwide protest amidst the escalating tensions in the country.

According to the recently released Multidimensional Poverty Index by the National Bureau of Statistics, it is evident that Ondo and Lagos have the lowest poverty rates in Nigeria. Therefore, in the event that the protest pertains to combatting poverty, these states may serve as valuable examples to emulate.
