The Nigerian Bar Association has established a free legal support service for individuals whose fundamental human rights may be infringed upon during the ongoing hunger protest. The President of the association, Yakubu Maikyau, issued a statement through the NBA National Publicity Secretary, Akorede Lawal, on Thursday. The statement revealed that instructions have been issued to all chairpersons of the 130 branches of the association to handle any cases of breach of fundamental human rights of individuals participating in the protest.
Participants are advised to conduct the protest peacefully, while law enforcement officials are urged to act professionally and respect the human rights of all individuals during their duties.
A monitoring committee has been set up to oversee the interactions between law enforcement personnel and protesters. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has issued a directive for Chairmen/Chairpersons of its branches to establish Situation Monitoring Committees in order to oversee and report on any incidents of harassment, intimidation, or torture carried out by law enforcement agents, protesters, or other individuals during protests.
