Inter-Religious Council Seeks End to Nationwide Protest
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) has made a heartfelt appeal to citizens to halt the ongoing nationwide protests and allow the government an opportunity to address the concerns that have sparked these demonstrations. The council, which represents both Islamic and Christian communities in Nigeria, acknowledges the significant challenges that have driven the protests but argues that continued civil unrest is not the solution and could further destabilize the country.

In a joint statement released on Friday in Abuja, the council was represented by Alhaji Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), and Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). The statement expressed deep concern about the negative developments resulting from the protests, which began peacefully on August 1 but quickly escalated into violence.

The statement highlights the severe consequences of the protests, noting that while they started with a clear and peaceful intent, they soon led to significant losses, including lives and property. The council reported with great sorrow that within just a single day, the escalation of violence had already caused considerable destruction. The statement warns that if the protests continue in this manner, the potential for further damage and loss is immense, with potentially devastating effects on the nation’s already fragile state.

NIREC’s leaders emphasized that the violent turn of events, despite initial peaceful demonstrations, has had a profoundly negative impact on the country. The statement reflects a grave concern over the rapid escalation from peaceful protests to violent clashes, which have led to unnecessary casualties and extensive damage to property. The council urges all parties involved to reflect on the situation and consider the broader implications of continuing the unrest.

In addition to calling for an end to the protests, NIREC has also appealed to security forces to maintain professionalism and exercise restraint in their operations. The council believes that a measured and responsible approach from security agencies is crucial in managing the situation and preventing further escalation.

Furthermore, the council urges the government to take swift and effective action to address the legitimate demands of the citizens. The statement underscores the need for the government to be responsive and proactive in resolving the issues that have led to the widespread demonstrations. NIREC’s call for prompt government action is aimed at restoring peace and stability, which are essential for the country’s progress and prosperity.

The statement concludes with a hopeful plea for peace and unity, emphasizing the importance of a tranquil and harmonious society. NIREC expresses its desire for Nigeria to be a nation that its people can be proud of and encourages all stakeholders to work towards achieving this goal.

It is important to note that the protests, which were initially scheduled to run from August 1 to August 10, have faced increasing pressure from various quarters to end, as many believe that the core messages have already been conveyed and that continuing the demonstrations might only exacerbate the situation.

NIREC’s appeal reflects a sincere effort to de-escalate the current unrest, urging for peace, professionalism, and constructive dialogue as the country seeks to address the issues at hand and move towards a more stable future.
