The UK government has issued at least 430,000 visas to Nigerians seeking to study or relocate to the European country in 2024.
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, disclosed this information on Wednesday during a meeting with Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), in Abuja. Montgomery assured the Federal Government of Nigeria that adequate security measures have been put in place for its citizens.
The High Commissioner stressed that the UK remains a haven despite the ongoing unrest, highlighting the UK’s diverse population.
He also noted that 60 special courts have been set up to combat criminal activities linked to the insurgency.
Montgomery reported that about 400 people have been arrested in connection with the violence and that the government is actively working to bring to justice those who stoke fears through online hate and disinformation.
NIDCOM Chairman, Dabiri-Erewa confirmed that so far no Nigerian casualties have been reported.
She explained that NIDCOM has been in contact with the Nigerian High Commission in London and other diaspora organizations, but none of them have reported any incidents involving Nigerian nationals.
Dabiri-Erewa commended the UK government for its swift action, especially the arrests, and advised Nigerians to remain safe and vigilant and follow travel advisories issued by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
