The Allied Conservative Congress (ACC) has made a significant push for a president from the Southeast in the 2027 general elections, arguing that this move would strengthen national unity and ensure fair representation.
This call was voiced by the party’s Chairman, Olusegun Peters, during the recent inauguration of the Abia State executives held in Umuahia. Peters, who was represented by Ibrahim Abdullahi, the ACC National Vice Chairman for the Northwest, expressed concerns about the historical lack of presidential representation from the Southeast.
He pointed out that since the tragic assassination of Gen. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi on July 29, 1966, the Southeast region has yet to produce a Nigerian president.
Abdullahi highlighted a significant disparity in the presidential history of Nigeria. Since the country’s return to democratic governance 25 years ago, no individual from the Igbo ethnic group has held the presidency.
In contrast, the North and the South-West have each had two terms in office. This uneven distribution of power, according to the ACC Chairman, underscores the need for a more equitable representation of all major ethnic groups in Nigeria.
The ACC’s stance is rooted in its commitment to fairness and balanced governance. The party aims to support the equitable distribution of power among Nigeria’s three dominant ethnic groups: the Igbo, the Hausa, and the Yoruba. Peters emphasized that achieving a more balanced representation would not only honor the democratic principles of the nation but also enhance national unity.
During the inauguration ceremony, Olusegun Peters also highlighted the industrious nature of the Igbo people. He expressed optimism that their innovative spirit and resilience could play a crucial role in addressing Nigeria’s current economic challenges. Peters urged the newly appointed Abia State executives to collaborate with unity and a clear sense of purpose. He stressed that the ACC is dedicated to advancing the welfare of all Nigerians, irrespective of their religious, ethnic, or educational backgrounds.
The event also saw remarks from several prominent party leaders. National Vice Chairman for North-Central, Hon. Illya Juan, National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Abubakar Sadiq, and National Vice Chairman for South-East, Vincent Eberechukwu, all extended their congratulations to the new executives. They expressed their confidence that this new leadership would guide the party to success in the upcoming elections.
Acting State Chairman of the ACC, Onyekachi Uwalaka, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the new state executives. He promised to focus on revitalizing the party to secure key governorship and legislative positions in Abia State in the 2027 elections.
The newly inaugurated team includes State Vice Chairman, Dr. Jiwuba Peter, and Party Secretary, Dr. Innocent Ikoro, among other principal officers. This new leadership team is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the ACC’s strategies and campaigns as the party prepares for the critical elections ahead.
