Establish High-Quality Health Institutions in Nigeria to End Medical Tourism Waste — Dr. Shittu

Dr. Adebayo Shittu, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), Uburu, has voiced strong support for ending the costly practice of medical tourism through the development of high-quality health institutions within Nigeria. He believes that facilities like DUFUHS have the potential to reduce the need for Nigerians to seek medical care abroad, where they are often treated by fellow countrymen.

Dr. Shittu made these remarks during a recent familiarization visit and comprehensive facility tour of DUFUHS. His visit included an inspection of the university’s state-of-the-art healthcare and educational facilities, which underscore the institution’s commitment to providing top-tier medical and health education.

During the visit, Dr. Shittu, who also served as the former Minister of Communications, took the opportunity to inaugurate the newly established Digital Awareness Centre at the university’s secondary school. This center, funded by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), aims to enhance digital literacy and technological skills among students, preparing them for the increasingly digital world.

In his speech, Dr. Shittu lauded DUFUHS as a standout institution, describing it as the most beautiful educational facility in Nigeria. He commended Senator David Nweze Umahi for his foresight and dedication in developing such an impressive edifice, which he believes will play a crucial role in transforming the country’s healthcare landscape.

Dr. Shittu emphasized that the establishment of high-standard health institutions like DUFUHS could significantly curb the trend of medical tourism. He pointed out that many Nigerians travel overseas for medical consultations and treatments, only to find that they are being cared for by Nigerian professionals. By investing in and promoting local institutions, Dr. Shittu argues, Nigeria can retain its healthcare talent and reduce unnecessary expenses.

The Vice-Chancellor of DUFUHS, Professor Jesse Uneke, welcomed Dr. Shittu warmly and introduced him to a cross-section of the university staff. Professor Uneke expressed gratitude for Dr. Shittu’s visit and support, noting that it highlights the institution’s commitment to excellence in health education and services.

Dr. Shittu’s visit was marked by a key event: the official commissioning of the Digital Awareness Centre. This project is a significant step in integrating modern technology into the educational system, benefiting both the students and the broader university community.

During his visit, Dr. Shittu reiterated his call for increased publicity for DUFUHS, encouraging the university to actively promote its services and achievements.
