Nigerian Defence Headquarters Confirms Killing of 4 Soldiers by Terrorists in Sokoto

On August 10, 2024, a tragic attack unfolded in the Gudu local government area of Sokoto State, Nigeria. Major-General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed that soldiers were ambushed by a group of terrorists. The assault occurred near the Bachaka Kurya Forest, close to the border with the Niger Republic.

According to Major-General Buba, the terrorists responsible for this attack are associated with a group known as Lakurawa, which originates from the Niger Republic. The ambush took place late at night, around 11:45 PM when the soldiers were engaged in a routine patrol. The terrorists, armed and prepared, caught the soldiers off guard, leading to a fierce confrontation.

During the firefight, which was described as intense, several terrorists were killed. In addition to these fatalities, the soldiers managed to recover various weapons and ammunition from the terrorists. This recovery is seen as a significant achievement, as it reduces the operational capacity of the terrorist group.

However, the attack had a heavy cost. Four soldiers lost their lives in this encounter. The surviving terrorists managed to escape back into the Niger Republic, despite the efforts of the soldiers to capture them. The military has since launched a pursuit operation, aiming to track down and neutralize the remaining members of the terrorist group.

Major-General Buba emphasized that the terrorists’ escape across the border complicates the situation. Nonetheless, the military is committed to continuing the pursuit to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of the region. He reassured the public that efforts were being made to address the threat and to restore security to the affected area.

In addition to the casualties, the terrorists inflicted further damage by setting ablaze two of the soldiers’ patrol vehicles. This act of destruction not only hampers the military’s operational capabilities but also serves as a psychological tactic to instill fear and disrupt security efforts in the region.

Yahaya Gudu, a member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly who represents the Gudu Constituency, confirmed the attack to journalists over the weekend. He described the incident as deeply distressing and expressed condolences for the loss of the soldiers. Gudu revealed that the terrorists had ambushed the soldiers on patrol along the Kukurau-Bangi Road. In addition to the fatalities, two soldiers were reported injured in the attack.

The lawmaker also provided details about the damage caused by the attack. The terrorists burned the patrol vehicles, which are critical assets for the soldiers. The destruction of these vehicles poses a significant setback to the ongoing security operations in the area.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu was promptly informed about the attack. In response, he took swift action by sending reinforcements to the affected area on the same day. This reinforcement aims to bolster the military’s presence and provide additional support in dealing with the aftermath of the attack.
The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in the region, particularly with the presence of cross-border terrorist groups. It highlights the need for continued vigilance, cooperation, and strategic responses to safeguard the safety and security of communities in Sokoto State and beyond.
