Vice-President Kashim Shettima has commended President Bola Tinubu for his modest leadership style, emphasizing his commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s prospects and his aversion to extravagance.
During a book launch in Abuja on Thursday, August 15, Shettima expressed his astonishment upon visiting Tinubu’s residence in Bourdillon, Ikoyi, Lagos. He had anticipated a grand mansion but instead encountered a humble abode.
He highlighted the contrast between Tinubu’s simplicity and the opulence typically expected of political figures, noting that his own home in Maiduguri is more luxurious than that of the President. Shettima urged Nigerians to rally behind President Tinubu, portraying him as a leader making difficult yet essential choices for the nation’s future.
He stated, “In President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we have a leader worthy of our trust. I am not engaging in political rhetoric; I speak sincerely. I have witnessed the essence of Bola Tinubu, and it is commendable.
“He genuinely cares for the nation. His ambition is to achieve greatness for Nigeria. He is not in power for selfish gain but aims to create a lasting legacy. He is perhaps the most vilified politician in Nigeria. When I first visited his residence at Bourdillon, I expected to see a palace akin to Buckingham, complete with gardens and swimming pools, yet found nothing extraordinary. My home in Maiduguri surpasses his grandeur.
“Moreover, during the early days of the APC, we convened at his home. While a variety of dishes were offered, he chose to have garri with groundnut for lunch. Throughout my acquaintance with him, he has consistently worn the same wristwatch, and I must admit, I dress more elegantly than he does. He remains indifferent to such matters. He has transcended these superficial concerns. Therefore, we must unite in support of this humble man. He has taken significant steps to address the dire state of the economy we inherited.”
Shettima further said “It is important to acknowledge our affiliation with the Buhari administration; we cannot refute this fact. We are part of the political family. The focus should not be on assigning blame but rather on addressing the needs of our nation. We were aware of the challenges that existed. Disregard the political maneuvers of Atiku Abubakar and his supporters, who have all claimed they would eliminate the fuel subsidy.
“The President possesses the necessary courage and political will to implement significant decisions, which often come with consequences. The process of childbirth, though painful, ultimately leads to a joyous occasion once the child is born. I am confident that history will look favorably upon this man.
“He has made substantial decisions, and we have successfully navigated through economic difficulties. Our economy is now on a trajectory of sustainable growth, with current oil exports reaching approximately 1.7 million barrels per day, and the Naira is stabilizing against the dollar. Given the food security crisis we face, we must recognize the global context of our situation.
“This is not merely a localized issue; however, it has been exacerbated by security challenges in the North Central and North West regions, which are traditionally the country’s food-producing areas. Rest assured, these security concerns will be addressed, and in the coming months, Nigerians can expect a significant improvement in their circumstances. I urge everyone to unite in support of this man.” Shettima concluded.
