The Association of Telecommunications, Cable Television and Internet Users of Nigeria (ATCIS) has opposed the tariff increase proposed by telecommunications operators, instead calling for improved quality of service.
At a press conference in Lagos on Friday, ATCIS national president Sina Bilesanmi described the timing of the proposed tariff hike as “most insensitive” given the prevailing economic challenges facing Nigerians.
“We are concerned that this strident call for a tariff hike is most unwelcome. It will impoverish telecom subscribers further, considering the realities on ground” Bilesanmi said.
He stressed the significant contribution of the telecommunications sector to Nigeria’s GDP but stressed that this is not a justification for imposing higher costs on consumers. “While we understand that the industry faces challenges, we believe this increase places an undue burden on consumers, many of whom are already struggling with the current economic situation,” the ATCIS president added.
The association called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to intervene, “We urge the telecom companies to show restraint in implementing these increases and to explore ways to minimise the impact on vulnerable consumers,” it said.
ATCIS also called for transparency from telecommunication companies, “We call for full transparency on the justification for this increase and the expected benefits to consumers.”
Bilesanmi also stressed the need to improve service quality, saying, “We demand that telecom companies improve service quality in line with the increased tariffs.”
Also speaking at the event, ATCIS Social Manager Sam Oladipupo stressed the need for fair billing practices and open consultation with stakeholders before any tariff increase.
