‘I Made a Horrible Mistake’ Israel Adesanya Gives Reason for Defeat

In an unexpected turn of events, Israel Adesanya, the Nigerian-born UFC fighter, faced a fourth-round submission defeat against South Africa’s Dricus Du Plessis during their middleweight title match at UFC 305 in Perth on Saturday evening.

Although Adesanya was ahead on the scorecards as they entered the championship rounds, his aspirations to reclaim the title were dashed by what he termed “a foolish mistake” on the ground, which enabled Du Plessis to execute a rear-naked choke.

In his reflections on the bout, Adesanya stated, “I felt strong; I defended against his takedowns effectively. I simply made a foolish error on the ground, and he adapted well to the Gable grip and caught me.”

The match, charged with intense pre-fight rivalry rooted in African heritage, featured both competitors in a demanding exchange. Adesanya, eager to silence his opponent, drew first blood early in the contest and displayed his signature striking, keeping Du Plessis on the defensive for the majority of the initial three rounds.

Nevertheless, Du Plessis’ tenacity and wrestling skills proved crucial, as he brought Adesanya down in the second round and gradually wore down the former champion. In the pivotal fourth round, a precisely timed left hook from Du Plessis altered the fight’s dynamics. As Adesanya struggled to regain dominance, the South African seized the opportunity with a takedown and quickly secured a rear-naked choke, compelling Adesanya to tap out.

Despite the setback, Adesanya maintained his composure, recognizing Du Plessis’ victory while expressing pride in his own performance. “I’m disappointed in myself, but at the same time, I’m proud. He was simply the better man tonight, and I respect him for that,” he remarked.

This defeat leaves the 35-year-old Adesanya contemplating his future in a division he once ruled. When queried about his next steps, he responded, “I didn’t think this far; I didn’t envision this! I’m 35.” For Du Plessis, this victory signifies a successful first title defense and reinforces his status as the undisputed middleweight champion.
