The former military head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), asserted that the zoning arrangements in the nation’s political landscape have been instrumental in fostering peace and stability within the system, urging political leaders to uphold this practice.
General Abdulsalami specifically lauded Niger State for its adherence to the zoning system across all political offices since the advent of democracy in 1999, noting the significant stability it has brought to the system.
Addressing members of the state House of Assembly during their visit in Minna, General Abdulsalami emphasized the efficacy of the zoning system in the state and expressed his hope for its continuity to bolster the functionality of democracy, particularly within Niger State.
Furthermore, he underscored the imperative of synergy and a harmonious rapport between the executive and legislative branches of government for the ultimate benefit of the populace, emphasizing that meaningful development would be impeded by unnecessary conflicts between the two arms of government.
Praising the state legislative arm for fostering a robust relationship with the executive, General Abdulsalami remarked, “I am thoroughly impressed by the commendable rapport I have observed. I urge you to maintain this harmonious relationship.”
He encouraged them to persevere in this trajectory to ensure a more prosperous and peaceful Niger State that advances economically, emphasizing that such progress is intrinsic to the essence of democracy.
In a prior dialogue, the Speaker conveyed their condolences to General Abdulsalami over the recent passing of his brother and military colleague, late General Garba Duba (retd).
He commended the former head of state for his dedication to nation-building, highlighting the necessity of drawing from his wealth of experience. Seeking his paternal blessings and guidance, he expressed their commitment to fulfilling their legislative duties for the holistic development of the state.
The Speaker apprised the elder statesman that the assembly and the state governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, have maintained a harmonious working relationship since their inception and pledged to uphold it for the betterment of the state.
According to the Speaker, the 10th Assembly is resolute in enacting laws to propel the state forward and fostering positive relationships with key stakeholders in the state.
The lawmakers also paid a visit to the residence of another Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd), situated in an elevated area of Minna.
