he Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State Council, has demanded an affordable nutrition policy as a national strategy. The union warned that the food security crisis in Nigeria is worsening malnutrition and increasing cases of chronic illnesses.
Speaking during the National Food Is Medicine Day on September 14, Abia NUJ Chairman Chidi Asonye raised concerns. He explained that soaring food costs deny families access to balanced meals, fueling malnutrition and diet-related illnesses nationwide.
Asonye emphasized that food should not remain just a commodity but a vital instrument for chronic illnesses prevention. He urged governments to adopt sustainable food policies that align with global campaigns linking nutrition to public health.
“Many households struggle to afford healthy meals, fueling malnutrition and illness across Nigeria,” Asonye stated. “Policy intervention is now mandatory.”
He further warned that Nigeria’s food security crisis, driven by inflation, could trigger widespread health challenges without urgent government response.
The NUJ chairman revealed that journalists in Abia have already launched a statewide campaign against hunger, malnutrition, and insecurity.
