The Organised Labour in Abia State decided to postpone their intended strike, which was originally set to begin on Monday, until July 28.
The leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) jointly announced this postpondment during a press conference. They explained that the reason for the delay is to enable them observe the implementation of the directives given by the Governor, based on the agreement reached between the Government and the Organised Labour regarding their various concerns.
The NLC Chairman asked workers to disregard the previous ultimatum that was set to expire on Monday and proceed with their regular duties until July 28. Labour warned that if the Government fails to uphold its part of the agreement by July 28, the Organized Labour will not need to issue any further notice but will immediately commence an indefinite strike. Comrade Ogbonnaya, the NLC boss, commended workers for their cooperation and persistence in their struggle for improved welfare. He noted that the Government had made some promises regarding the demands of the Organised Labour, and this is why they have decided to allow time to monitor the implementation of promises.
The government has promised to disclose the details of the Memorandum of Understanding once the necessary signatories have endorsed the document. They have also approved a wage increase of N15,000 for workers for a period of three months, starting from July. Additionally, the Governor has agreed to pay the Leave Allowance for workers in 2024, but has stated that any worker who fails to proceed on annual leave will not receive the allowance. The Governor has also approved the immediate payment of severance packages for Permanent Secretaries who retired in 2023.
Furthermore, the Governor has directed the Head of Service and the Civil Service Commission to initiate regular promotions for workers. The NLC boss expressed gratitude to the Governor for addressing the demands of Abia workers, acknowledging that some workers were struggling with their financial obligations due to the economic hardship in the country. The TUC Chairman expressed hope that the government will honor its commitments, and the TUC Secretary, Comrade John Okogbuo, and other union members were present at the press conference held at the NLC state secretariat on Aba Road in Umuahia.
