The Nigerian Police Force has appointed Adebola Ayinde Hamzat as the new Assistant Inspector General (AIG) for Zone 16 Command, with headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. This appointment, made by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, follows the retirement of AIG Paul Alifa Omata.
The announcement was made in a statement released by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, SP Emonena Gunn, on Tuesday.
AIG Hamzat, a native of Ifelodun Local Government Area in Kwara State, has a distinguished career within the Nigerian Police Force. He was commissioned as a cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on May 18, 1992, and is recognised as a seasoned officer and a distinguished fellow of the Defence College. His career spans various high-level roles in both domestic and international policing.
Notably, Hamzat has earned a reputation as an experienced investigator and intelligence expert. His operational skills have been highlighted through commendable service during United Nations missions in Kosovo (UNMIK) and Timor-Leste (East Timor). His vast experience in global and local security operations makes him a highly regarded figure in the force.
Before his appointment to Zone 16, Hamzat served as the AIG in charge of the Counter Terrorism Unit of the Nigerian Police Force. He has also held previous positions as the Commissioner of Police for Oyo State and the Commissioner of Police for the Border Patrol Force.
The police statement urged residents of Bayelsa and Rivers states to support Hamzat in his new role, emphasising that his leadership will enhance security efforts in the region, in line with IGP Egbetokun’s policing agenda.
