Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has celebrated his 60th birthday by granting freedom to 15 convicted inmates and commuting sentences for 25 others. The move, announced by the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, underscores the governor’s commitment to rehabilitation and second chances.
Inmates on death row had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment, while others saw reductions in their jail terms. Dr. Ajulo, who also chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, emphasized that the gesture aligns with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
“The governor’s action nurtures hope for reintegration into society, reflecting the transformative power of mercy,” Dr. Ajulo stated.
Governor Aiyedatiwa opted to forgo his birthday celebrations in honor of the late Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Oluwatuyi Tayo (Tuykana), who passed away recently.
