Andre Onana Under Fire Again as Man Utd Drop Points in Europa League

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed continued confidence in goalkeeper Andre Onana despite a night to forget in their Europa League clash against Lyon.

The Cameroonian shot-stopper was at fault for both goals as United were held to a 2-2 draw in France. Lyon’s late

equaliser, coming in the fifth minute of stoppage time, added salt to the wound after a series of individual errors from

the goalkeeper. Onana first struggled to deal with a cross into the box, only managing to palm the ball into his own net to give Lyon the lead.

Later in the match, he failed to safely secure a powerful shot, instead pushing it back into play and allowing Rayan

Cherki to capitalize. The two mistakes cost United what could have been a crucial away victory. Despite the high-

profile blunders, Amorim was quick to publicly defend his goalkeeper.

Speaking after the match, he insisted there was little he could say to Onana that would help in the moment. “There’s

nothing I can say to Andre right now that will help him,” he stated. “The most important thing is to be natural, and

when the time comes, I’ll choose the best 11 to play. But I remain confident in Andre.”

Amorim added that he would lean on his coaching staff, particularly goalkeeper coaches Jorge Vital and Craig

Mawson, to assess the situation and provide technical support. “The best way to help any player is to review the

game with the right people, identify what went wrong, and focus on improvement,” he said.

Onana’s performances have continued to divide opinion since his arrival from Inter Milan to replace long-time No. 1

David de Gea. While he remains United’s first-choice goalkeeper, his error-prone displays have raised concerns among fans and pundits alike.

In the wake of this latest disappointment, former United midfielder Nemanja Matic publicly criticised Onana, labelling him one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history, a comment that sparked a heated exchange between the two.
