The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) will not use the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for the upcoming local government elections on September 28.
This decision follows concerns about the system’s reliability, which has distorted Nigeria’s electoral process.
During a sensitization program, Anthony Nnalue, ANSIEC’s Commissioner for Information and Logistics, explained the commission’s decision.
The program aimed to educate accredited election observers and media about the election measures being implemented.
Nnalue said the commission will use manual accreditation, stating, “We will not use BVAS but manual. BVAS is not reliable; it has distorted the electoral process in Nigeria. We do not want a situation where election results are tampered with.”
This statement reflects the commission’s commitment to safeguarding electoral integrity.
Nnalue also assured that delayed election materials will no longer be an issue.
He said non-sensitive materials are en route to local councils. He added that 5,720 trained ad-hoc staff are ready for the elections across polling units. “We are fully prepared for the election, in terms of security, materials, and logistics,” he added.
However, elections will not occur in Nnewi South, Orumba South, and Idemili South areas. Voters will cast ballots at the council headquarters instead. Nnalue explained this decision was to prioritize safety and avoid risks.
Nnalue urged voters to participate, saying, “We urge the electorate to come out en masse and vote; your vote will count.”
Chris Azor, Coordinator of the International Peace and Civil Responsibility Centre (IPCRC), addressed the gathering. He urged vigilance against common electoral malpractices like vote-buying, violence, and gender discrimination.
Azor emphasized the importance of peace and called on security agencies to remain neutral and respect human rights.
Azor also announced the establishment of a Situation Room in Awka. This will help with real-time coordination and reporting during the election.
“As accredited observers, we are committed to ensuring a free, fair, credible, and peaceful local government election in Anambra State,” he concluded.
ANSIEC is hopeful the elections will proceed smoothly, reflecting Anambra State’s democratic aspirations.
