APC in Benue State Calls ‘Dissolution of State Working Committee’ Illegal
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on EmailShare on Telegram

The Benue State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticized the recent decision by the National Working Committee (NWC) to dissolve the State Working Committee (SWC), labeling the move as illegal, unlawful, and unconstitutional.

The statement came in response to the dissolution announced on August 21, 2024, which the party argues is not only inappropriate but also in violation of existing legal orders.

On Thursday, Mr. Daniel Ihomum, the Publicity Secretary of the APC in Benue State, issued a detailed statement addressing the controversy. Ihomum stressed that the dissolution of the Benue State Working Committee was not authorized and was done without proper legal grounds.

According to Ihomum, there is an active court order issued by Honourable Justice T.A. Igoche of the Benue State High Court in Makurdi. This order specifically restrains the NWC or any other body within the APC from removing, altering, or replacing the current State Working Committee until its four-year term ends. The court’s order is in place pending the outcome of a motion on notice, which addresses the legality of such actions.

Ihomum emphasized that it is both illegal and unconstitutional for the NWC to attempt to dissolve or replace a democratically elected committee while a court order is in effect. He underlined that this decision by the NWC is a direct violation of the court’s directive and, therefore, should not be recognized or acted upon. The statement made it clear that the APC in Benue State will not accept the dissolution and will continue to operate under the authority of its existing State Working Committee.

Furthermore, Ihomum reassured APC members and supporters in Benue State that they should continue to focus on party activities as usual. He specifically mentioned that the Local Government Primary Election scheduled for Saturday, August 24, will proceed as planned, despite the controversy surrounding the dissolution. The party aims to maintain stability and ensure that all planned events and activities go forward smoothly.

The APC in Benue State is urging all its members to disregard the NWC’s recent actions and to remain united in their support for the current State Working Committee. The party believes that adhering to the court order and respecting democratic processes is crucial for maintaining the integrity and lawful operation of its organizational structure. The situation highlights ongoing tensions within the APC and underscores the importance of legal adherence and internal party governance in Nigeria’s political landscape.
