A coalition of support groups within the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing confrontation between former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The groups argue that Bello, who has contributed significantly to the APC’s progress, is facing unwarranted persecution from the EFCC over allegations of financial misconduct.
In a joint statement, the coalition alleged that the EFCC is acting on behalf of unidentified interests seeking to undermine the party and hinder President Tinubu’s potential re-election bid. The statement was issued by Mr. Victor Odunlana, Coordinator of APC Youths Connect (APCYC), and Malam Musa Kassim Bello, Chairman of APC Unity Mandate (APCUM). They stressed that the agency’s continuous public display of allegations against Bello serves only as a distraction.
The coalition argued that the EFCC’s approach lacks fairness, calling for an unbiased and balanced fight against corruption. “There must be equity on the part of the EFCC in its fight against graft and not selective as it is currently being done by the agency,” the statement read. They emphasized that any selective application of justice could erode public trust in the anti-graft agency and damage its integrity.
The support groups also expressed concern over the perceived weakening of Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts, alleging that the EFCC has compromised its mission to combat corruption impartially. They called on President Tinubu to address this issue to ensure the agency remains committed to a fair and balanced approach in its operations.
As civil society groups and concerned citizens, the coalition reaffirmed their support for the APC and its principles, urging the EFCC to avoid unnecessary drama and focus on upholding its duty in an equitable manner.
