Nasarawa State Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Sule, has dismissed concerns surrounding the potential merger of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, reaffirming the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s strong position. Speaking on national television, Sule emphasized that the APC was undeterred by the rumors of political alignments and mergers, insisting that the party’s path forward remains steadfast.
Governor Sule acknowledged the challenging decisions made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration but expressed confidence in the long-term benefits of these policies, which he believes will shape public opinion favourably by the time the 2027 elections arrive. He highlighted key achievements such as economic growth, revitalising the Warri and Port Harcourt refineries, and addressing critical tax reforms as evidence of the administration’s progress.
The governor addressed the rumors of opposition party mergers, particularly the discussions between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), dismissing them as non-threatening. He reminded that, despite similar political moves in Nasarawa State during the 2019 and 2023 elections, he successfully emerged as governor even when facing formidable political opposition. This, he argued, showed that political realignments do not guarantee electoral success for the opposition.
Sule further downplayed speculation about the impact of former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir el-Rufai’s political treatment, asserting that it is too early to discuss the 2027 elections. He emphasised that the APC’s success will depend on its performance at all levels of government, including states and local governments, and not solely on federal actions.
