A non-profit organisation, YIAGA Africa, has said that Nigeria needs someone who is non-partisan, with impeccable character, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman.
Mr Samson Itodo, the Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, said this on Wednesday, while responding to questions in an interview on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television.
Itodo said that the remarkable reforms recorded by INEC had been dampened by electoral fraud.
According to him, anyone who would succeed the incumbent National Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, should have no political affiliation and be courageous to do the lawful thing, no matter whose ox is gored.
“There’s a great need that the next INEC chairman or national commissioners should be individuals that not only have impeccable character but do not have any partisan connection whatsoever.
“In fact, that person should not have been a member of a political party, whether present or past.
“Also, the next INEC chairman or national commissioners should be people who have courage, who have the ability to resist political pressure,” he said.
