Arsenal midfielder Jorginho is reportedly considering a January departure due to a lack of consistent playing time under Mikel Arteta. The 33-year-old Italian international has struggled for minutes this season, making just nine starts across all competitions.
With his current contract set to expire in six months, Arsenal appears unlikely to offer the veteran a new deal. The Gunners are reportedly open to cashing in on Jorginho in January to avoid losing him for free in the summer. According to ESPN, discussions between the player’s agent and Arsenal have led to interest from Brazilian clubs Palmeiras and Flamengo, where the midfielder may seek a fresh start.
Jorginho joined Arsenal from Chelsea in January 2023 for £12 million and has made over 60 appearances for the North London side. However, the lack of opportunities this season has left him frustrated, prompting speculation about a potential move back to Brazil, where he was born before representing Italy internationally.
Arsenal is currently in a tight Premier League title race, sitting six points behind leaders Liverpool. However, injuries, including a long-term setback to star winger Bukayo Saka, have hindered their creativity and attacking dynamism. Arteta has hinted at potential January reinforcements but remains cautious about market options.
In a recent press conference, Arteta acknowledged the squad’s limitations: “We have certain gaps to cover to become the team we want. Bringing in bodies doesn’t help unless they bring something unique to the team.” This pragmatic approach may influence whether Arsenal opts to release Jorginho and reinvest the funds into a new signing.
