The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Jos chapter, has urged the federal government to address the escalating security challenges and economic hardships in the nation.
Associate Professor Jurbe Molwus, the chairman of the union, made this statement during a press briefing in Jos.
Mr. Molwus attributed the growing poverty among Nigerians to certain government policies, notably the elimination of fuel subsidies.
“The well-known removal of subsidies and the adoption of a floating exchange rate have led to hyperinflation evident in the increased prices of various goods,” he remarked.
“The standard of living for average Nigerians has diminished, and the disparity between the affluent and the underprivileged is widening each day,” he added.
The chairman implored the federal government to expedite the process of establishing a minimum wage as requested by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
He recommended that the government promptly reassess all economic policies that are contributing to the deterioration of living standards in Nigeria.
Mr. Molwus urged the federal government to honor all agreements made with ASUU over the years before the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued by its national executive council.
He cautioned that failure to uphold the agreements within the specified timeframe might lead to a comprehensive industrial action by the union.
