Ajax took a significant step towards the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League with a convincing 2-0 victory over Union Saint Gilloise in the first leg clash on Thursday. The Dutch giants showcased their attacking prowess, with young Belgian prodigy Jorthy Mokio stealing the show with a magnificent goal.
Mokio, just 16 years old, made his first start for Ajax in the league match against Fortuna Sittard last Sunday, and once again demonstrated his immense talent. He initially played as a left-back in his league debut but occupied a defensive pivot role in Thursday’s encounter.
The Belgian youngster helped Ajax gain control of the match, which tilted decisively in favor of the visitors during the second half. Mokio’s performance reaffirmed the high expectations surrounding him, and his goal in the 71st minute sealed the win for Ajax.
Ajax came close to scoring in the first half, with Norwegian Oliver Edvardsen’s strike cleared off the line by a local defender. However, the visitors broke the deadlock in the 59th minute with a goal from Danish player Christian Rasmussen.
Mokio’s spectacular strike from just outside the area after a corner kick confirmed his bright future in the sport. The young Belgian has already debuted for the Belgian U21 national team at just 16 and is widely regarded as one of the most promising talents in European football.
