Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has been ruled out of the team’s Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund due to a lingering leg injury. The 24-year-old has been sidelined since suffering the injury while on international duty with Nigeria in November. Despite hopes for a swift recovery, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso confirmed that Boniface is still a few games away from returning to action.
The injury, which initially appeared minor, has kept the forward from making a return as expected earlier this year. Leverkusen had described his setback as “small,” but Alonso clarified that the recovery process has taken longer than anticipated. Boniface’s absence continues to affect the team’s attacking options, with the striker having contributed six goals and an assist in 10 Bundesliga appearances this season.
Alonso remained cautious about setting a timeline for Boniface’s return, suggesting that it could take more time before he is ready for competitive play. “He needs a bit more time. We need to be patient to get him back and at his best”, Alonso said. There is uncertainty whether Boniface will feature in Leverkusen’s upcoming fixtures against Mainz and Borussia Monchengladbach.
In addition to Boniface, the club may also face a challenge in midfield as Granit Xhaka is a doubt for the Dortmund match due to an ankle issue. Alonso stated that a final decision on Xhaka’s participation would be made closer to match time, but expressed hope that the Swiss international could still make it to the game. “We need a bit more time with Granit, but we are hopeful,” Alonso commented.
